Being Chosen
Being Chosen
7 So the honor is
for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,
“The stone that the builders rejected
has
become the cornerstone,” 8 and
“A stone of stumbling,
and
a rock of offense.”
They stumble because they disobey the
word, as they were destined to do.
9 But you are a
chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own
possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of
darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a
people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now
you have received mercy.
(1 Peter 2:7-10 ESV®)
Doing a devotion, I came to this scripture
portion and memories flooded into my mind. Through the Grace of God I was born
into a loving family. I felt secure and loved, except for an occasional hassle
with my siblings. Between family and church, I felt total acceptance. They I
reached the grand old age of 5 years old. I was forced into a whole new world.
In this world, everyone did not see me as my family saw me.
Starting in kindergarten, I was exposed to
a rating system by my fellow students. I did not understand the system at
first. As the year progressed, I learned to not like this rating system since I
was destined to be in the undesirable group. The desirable group seemed to be
having much more fun. Then, the elementary grades showed up.
One the very first things I learned in
elementary school was there was this thing called “being chosen”. Being chosen
was something I was seldom. As I progressed through the grades I learned more
lessons not on the teacher’s curriculum. Having a speech impediment, I was
never chosen for a spelling bee team. In addition, it was the fourth grade
before I could spell Cincinnati the same two or more times in a row. (That is
how you can tell children that live in Cincinnati, they can actually spell it.)
When it came to sports, the word I remember learning was “clumsy”. By the time
I reached high school I had learned more than a few dozen groups where I was
not “being chosen”.
As a young adult I started being nudged by
the Holy Spirit to look more closely at this Chirstian thing I was baptized
into. Other than youth group, the church had always been a place where I felt
like I was being chosen. As I incorporated myself into the church, I gained
better knowledge of the Christian faith. Through help from the Holy Spirit, the
Word was opened for me. “Being chosen” was no longer a mirage but it was realized.
And even better, I was chosen by the One and Only True God. This Lord Jesus,
who lived, died and rose to save me. And this chosen (saving) is forever and
ever.
Hey! The above does not only apply to me
but also to you. God is choosing you also to be a part of His Kingdom right
here. Make yourself available and He will use you. And this time you have been
chosen, and promised, to be on the winning team. He will be with you. (That is
God's promise not mine. It's in His Book.) If you are not sure where to start
talk to a Pastor or Deacon. If you think
you are beyond being chosen talk to me.
Get to know the Word and you will get to
know God. God can't steer a parked car,
so get going.
