Acts 5:17-42
The Apostles Arrested and Freed
17 But the high priest rose up, and all who
were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy
18 they arrested the apostles and put them in
the public prison. 19 But during the
night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and
said, 20 “Go and stand in the temple
and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” 21 And
when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.
Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him,
they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and
sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But
when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned
and reported, 23 “We found the prison
securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them
we found no one inside.” 24 Now when
the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were
greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. 25 And someone came and told them, “Look! The men
whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.”
26 Then the captain with the officers went and
brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the
people.
27 And when they had brought them, they set
them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, 28 saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in
this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you
intend to bring this man's blood upon us.” 29 But
Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you
killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God
exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to
Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And
we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given
to those who obey him.”
33 When they heard this, they were enraged
and wanted to kill them. 34 But a
Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by
all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little
while. 35 And he said to them, “Men of
Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36 For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming
to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was
killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days
of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and
all who followed him were scattered. 38 So
in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone,
for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to
overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice,
40 and when they had called in the apostles,
they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them
go. 41 Then they left the presence of
the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the
name. 42 And every day, in the temple
and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the
Christ is Jesus.
Psalm 18:1-30
The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered
him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:
18 I
love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock
and my fortress and my deliverer,
my
God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my
shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
and
I am saved from my enemies.
4 The cords of death encompassed
me;
the
torrents of destruction assailed me;[a]
5 the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the
snares of death confronted me.
6 In my distress I called upon
the Lord;
to
my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and
my cry to him reached his ears.
7 Then the earth reeled and
rocked;
the
foundations also of the mountains trembled
and
quaked, because he was angry.
8 Smoke went up from his nostrils,[b]
and
devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing
coals flamed forth from him.
9 He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick
darkness was under his feet.
10 He rode on a cherub and flew;
he
came swiftly on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy
around him,
thick
clouds dark with water.
12 Out of the brightness before him
hailstones
and coals of fire broke through his clouds.
13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
and
the Most High uttered his voice,
hailstones
and coals of fire.
14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered
them;
he
flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
15 Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and
the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
at
the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
16 He sent from on high, he took
me;
he
drew me out of many waters.
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy
and
from those who hated me,
for
they were too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my
calamity,
but
the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a broad place;
he
rescued me, because he delighted in me.
20 The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according
to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord,
and
have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all his rules[c] were
before me,
and
his statutes I did not put away from me.
23 I was blameless before him,
and
I kept myself from my guilt.
24 So the Lord has
rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according
to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25 With the merciful you show
yourself merciful;
with
the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26 with the purified you show yourself pure;
and
with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27 For you save a humble people,
but
the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my lamp;
the
Lord my God lightens my darkness.
29 For by you I can run against a troop,
and
by my God I can leap over a wall.
30 This God—his way is perfect;[d]
the
word of the Lord proves true;
he
is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
