SEPTEMBER 24, 2025 PORTALS OF PRAYER READINGS
Matthew 5:38-48
Retaliation
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye
for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But
I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the
right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And
if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[a] let him
have your cloak as well. 41 And if
anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not
refuse the one who would borrow from you.
Love Your Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You
shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But
I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in
heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain
on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if
you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax
collectors do the same? 47 And if you
greet only your brothers,[b] what more
are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly
Father is perfect.

Psalm 37:1-11
He Will Not Forsake His Saints
[a] Of David.
37 Fret not
yourself because of evildoers;
be
not envious of wrongdoers!
2 For they will soon fade like the grass
and
wither like the green herb.
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell
in the land and befriend faithfulness.[b]
4 Delight yourself in the Lord,
and
he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust
in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your righteousness as
the light,
and
your justice as the noonday.
7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret
not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over
the man who carries out evil devices!
8 Refrain from anger, and
forsake wrath!
Fret
not yourself; it tends only to evil.
9 For the evildoers shall be cut off,
but
those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
10 In just a little while, the
wicked will be no more;
though
you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.
11 But the meek shall inherit the land
and
delight themselves in abundant peace.
