Fix Your Eyes
Fix Your Eyes
1 Therefore, since
we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off
everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run
with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing
our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before
him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of
the throne of God. 3 Consider him who
endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose
heart. (Hwbrews12:1-3 NIV®)
I was having a
balance problem while walking. To help me overcome this problem I was referred
to physical therapy. In physical therapy sessions I was taught to fix my eyes
on something unchanging and unmovable in front of me. By concentrating on a
fixed object, my balance greatly improved. I could walk straight without
swaying to the right or the left.
In my life, I found
this is a good practice also to keep me on a straight moral course. There is
not a better person to fix my eyes on than Jesus. He does not change and He is
the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). When I have found myself in a
situation that seemed confusing as what to do, I would shoot a quick prayer to
my unmovable compass in heaven. This gave me the gift of Christian discernment.
Most of my
decisions in life have been pretty clear as to which is the choice a follower
of Jesus would make; to worship the God of heaven and earth or the computer.
But I find myself having to make decisions that are grayish, like helping my
neighbor. The world would seem to give me advice in the direction of someone
else is better equipped, or it is none of your business. But Jesus said to love
your neighbor (Matthew 22:39). Reaching out to help seems to be the discernment
I get from praying and knowing the Word from God.
Another lesson I
have learned is to ask for discernment on how to handle my earthly resources.
The book of Proverbs is loaded with guidance Through the Word I have learned it
all belongs to God (Psalm 24:1). As the new year starts, open yourself to the
guidance from Jesus who gave His all so we can inherit a deed in heaven. Look
around you at the opportunities God has placed for your care.
Pray and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.
