 CURATE’S CORNER:

Typical preparation for the Holy Ministry requires a four-year college degree. When attending a Concordia University, a student might complete up to three years of Greek and two years of Hebrew, in addition to other biblical coursework. Coming into the seminary there are entrance exams. A prospective student is examined in Hebrew, Greek, Old and New Testament knowledge, and doctrine or teachings from the Bible. If the student is deficient in one of the areas, the student must take intensive classes during the summer or before coming to the seminary. The seminary has four departments: 1) Exegetical: which are biblical languages and Old and New Testament studies. 2) Systematics or dogmatics (doctrine) based in the Bible like Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, Trinity, etc. 3). History: World and American Church history, historical debates, church councils, etc. 4) Practical: preaching, crisis pastoral counseling, funeral, weddings, pastor and church wellbeing, etc. After two years of seminary studies, then one full year of vicarage (internship) in a congregation and then one more year of seminary studies that would complete their education for the pastoral ministry. - Pastor Dreyer
