CURATE’S CORNER: If you ask my catechism class at RLS what is the smallest unit of society, they will say “family”. If you ask them, what is foundation of understanding church and society, they will say “family”. A church that has it right does not first seek to be a big church, a church with many programs, or a church that tries to be attractive to others for one reason or another, but a church is first what it means to be a family of God in Christ Jesus. Does the church fundamentally exist with many subgroups as a church or do they act together as a whole family? The Bible consistently describes the church as a family, emphasizing unity and shared identity (Eph. 4:4-6, one faith, hope, baptism, et al), and mutual care for one another (Gal. 6:2, 1 John 3:18, et al). God is described as our heavenly Father, and we are His children in our baptism (Rom. 8:14-17; 1 John 3:1, Gal. 3:26-29). We are called brothers and sisters in Christ. (Gal. 6:10; Rom. 16:1, 1 Peter 5:12). Eph. 2:19 says it so clearly, “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.” How can we grow as a church family? Plan church family events at church or at another place away from the church like a park, or restaurant, going to a play that one of our youth are in, etc. Thinking for the welfare of our whole church community making sure everyone is provided with things that they need. - Pastor Dreyer
