My Blankie

My Blankie

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (John 14:26-27 ESV®)

When my son, Tim, was playing t-ball, it seemed like a fairly safe sport but the ball still got batted. In one game he was positioned as an infielder. A boy came to bat that was good at hitting the ball off the tee. A line drive was hit right at Tim. He attempted to catch the screaming ball but was not quite on target. The ball hit his shoulder. He fell down while another infielder threw the ball to first base. Tim got up holding his shoulder. The coach was going to take him out of the game but Tim wanted to stay in. Since there was only one more out to complete the game, the coach left him in. When he came off the field, some of the players and the fans were saying what a brave boy he was.

Upon arriving home, Tim went to his room and got his blankie. His mother went to the freezer to retrieve a bag of frozen peas to put on his shoulder. As Tim sat on his mother’s lap I could hear a soft weepering.

This reminded me of how I often feel as I deal with getting older. Just as I am adjusting to one diagnose, a medical provider comes up with another diagnose. I am told how well I am handling all the physical issues but that is only my public persona.

When I am home alone, I go for my blankie. My blankie is the Holy Bible and prayer. The Word of God gives me the assurance that I am not alone and all is in the hands of the God who truly loves me. Sometimes while I pray, I may softly cry since Jesus wants me to be honest. My praying is a mix of praise and pleads for comfort. Many days the pleads outnumber the praise but I know that the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Wess understands.

When the world gets to be more than I can handle, I take it to Jesus. At times, He surprises me with supplying someone with flesh to lift me up.

God is good; God is good all the time!
