CURATE’S CORNER June 28, 2026
CURATE’S CORNER: Curate’s Corner: Last week’s Curate’s Corner was about the preparation and studies that are required by men who desire to become pastors in our Church. This article is going to describe the vicarage program and what it entails. For newer members, a vicar is a student who is training to be a pastor for exactly one year. The term “vicar” comes from Latin which means “in place of” or “in the stead of”. In more practical terms, the vicar is shadowing me in my ministry and is in training. But also, the vicarage program takes shape by the expectations placed by the seminaries of our Church body. The vicar is not a pastor so he cannot do certain things in the services like the Lord’s Supper or Holy Absolution (what happens at the begging of the service). Also, what he does in front of the church may seem a little different from what we are used to but this is to teach the vicar about the liturgy and the different mannerisms that are part of the liturgy (worship service). Same worship service but some different mannerisms. Two things I ask of the congregation are: 1) That all pastoral situations go through me. The vicar will almost always accompany me in pastoral care situations, but he is not yet a pastor or a pastor of this church. 2) Please address him as Vicar or Vicar Peeler. The vicar can always make his own choices when he becomes a pastor, but he is to image the ministry here at our Redeemer. In time he will be doing some things on his own or lead different things such as Bible study, etc. He will also be working with our school as well. I think our church will be a great blessing to the vicar and I am sure we will be blessed by his service to us as a vicar. Peace in Christ, Pastor Dreyer
